Turkey Builds Europe's Largest Solar Farm and Battery Pipeline

Turkey just built one of the world's biggest solar farms, and the futuristic facility looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie.

The Kalyon Karapınar solar plant sprawls across 20 million square meters with 3.5 million solar panels. That's roughly the size of 2,600 football fields, all working together to power a city of two million people with clean energy.

Its sleek Central Control Building has turned heads online, with its reflective silver exterior hiding a stunning courtyard oasis inside. Reddit users are calling it a masterpiece that could star in the next James Bond film.

But Turkey's renewable revolution goes far beyond one impressive facility. The country has quietly built Europe's largest battery storage pipeline, surpassing every EU nation including Germany and Italy.

Since 2022, Turkey has required all new wind and solar projects to include equivalent battery storage capacity. That single policy triggered 221 gigawatts of applications within months, with 33 gigawatts already approved.

To put that in perspective, Germany and Italy each have only 12 to 13 gigawatts. Turkey's approved pipeline represents 83 percent of its current wind and solar capacity combined.

"By mandating storage with renewables, Turkey hasn't just increased its targets. It has created a massive investment signal that outstrips its European peers," says Ufuk Alparslan, author of a new Ember report on Turkey's energy transition.

Wind and solar now provide 22 percent of Turkey's electricity, making it the undisputed leader among 16 countries across the Middle East, Caucasus, and Central Asia. It's the only country in this entire region where renewables have crossed the 20 percent threshold.

The Ripple Effect

Turkey's renewable surge is creating opportunities beyond its borders. Energy experts say the country could become a clean energy hub for its entire region, exporting both electricity and expertise.

The battery storage mandate has attracted massive investment and shown other countries how simple policy changes can accelerate the transition. If Turkey delivers on its pipeline, it will have the infrastructure to finally break free from coal dependency.

Coal still provides 34 percent of Turkey's power, and the country ranks only 15th in Europe for wind generation. But the trajectory is clear, and Turkey hosts the COP31 climate conference this November with real progress to showcase.

Turkey is proving that middle-tier countries can leapfrog to renewable leadership with the right policies and investments.
