Turkey Hits Solar Power Record, Goes 72% Renewable

Turkey's solar panels are working overtime, and the results are stunning.

In July 2026, the country generated 5.37 billion kilowatt-hours from solar power alone, smashing the previous record set just one month earlier. That's enough electricity to power roughly 1.6 million homes for an entire year, all from sunshine.

The solar surge is part of something much bigger happening across Turkey's energy landscape. Hydroelectric plants led the way with 26.2% of total electricity generation, while solar contributed 15.5%. Together with wind power, which also set a daily record on July 30, renewable sources now account for 58.2% of Turkey's total electricity output.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar called it a "historic double record." Not only did solar hit new heights, but electricity from domestic sources reached 24.75 billion kilowatt-hours, meaning Turkey generated 71.5% of its power at home without relying on imports.

The momentum keeps building. Between January and July, Turkey generated more electricity from hydroelectric, wind, and solar sources than in any similar period since 2000. All three energy types simultaneously reached record levels, a rare achievement that signals coordinated growth across the renewable sector.

July brought daily records too. On July 19, solar panels produced 189,680 megawatt-hours in a single day. Eleven days later, wind turbines generated 265,512 megawatt-hours, setting their own daily milestone.

The Ripple Effect

Turkey's renewable energy boom creates benefits that extend far beyond cleaner air. Every kilowatt-hour generated domestically means less money flowing out of the country to buy imported fossil fuels. That keeps energy costs more stable and predictable for families and businesses.

The shift also positions Turkey as a regional clean energy leader. The country now ranks in the global top ten for wind and solar installations, proving that rapid renewable transformation is possible even for growing economies with increasing energy demands.

Local communities near solar and wind facilities are seeing new job opportunities in construction, maintenance, and technical services. These aren't temporary positions—they're careers in an industry that's clearly here to stay.

Turkey's target is complete energy independence through domestic sources. With domestic generation at 73.9% for the year and climbing, that goal looks increasingly achievable. Each new solar panel installed and wind turbine erected moves the country closer to energy security while fighting climate change.
