Turkey Launches First Major Solar Plant With Battery Storage

Turkey just flipped the switch on a game-changing energy project that could light the way for cleaner power across the country.

The Sivrihisar facility, located about 140 kilometers southwest of Ankara, combines a massive solar farm with battery storage to become Turkey's first major hybrid renewable energy plant. Developer Oze Grup confirmed the project completed all regulatory hurdles and officially entered service last week.

The numbers tell an impressive story. The plant features 49.2 megawatts of solar panels paired with a 34.1 megawatt-hour battery system. That means it can generate clean electricity during sunny days and store enough power to keep homes and businesses running after sunset.

This isn't just another solar farm. The Sivrihisar project represents the first grid-connected hybrid facility developed under Turkey's DGES framework, a licensing system specifically designed for solar-storage projects. The government created this pathway to encourage exactly this kind of innovation.

The Ripple Effect

The timing couldn't be better for Turkey's energy future. Like many countries, Turkey has been racing to add renewable power to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions. But solar and wind energy face one major challenge: they don't produce power around the clock.

Battery storage solves that problem. By capturing excess solar energy during peak sunshine hours, these systems can dispatch clean electricity whenever it's needed most. That makes renewable energy far more practical and valuable to the power grid.

Turkey's success with Sivrihisar could inspire similar projects across the region. The Middle East and Mediterranean countries share excellent solar resources but have struggled with energy storage costs and technical challenges. This working model proves the technology is ready today.
