Turkish Badminton Team Eyes Olympics After Gold Sweep

Four badminton players from Erzincan, Turkey are chasing Olympic history after dominating the Mediterranean Games with a stunning three-gold-medal performance.

Emre Sonmez, Yasemen Bektas, Bengisu Ercetin, and Nazli Can Inci swept the podium in Italy this September, winning gold in women's doubles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles. The athletes heard their national anthem play three times at the awards ceremonies.

Now back home, the team trains six days a week at the KYK Sports Hall under coaches Murat Sonmez and Ugur Ercetin. Their focus has shifted entirely to securing Olympic qualification spots for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

"Our biggest goal is the Olympics," said Bengisu Ercetin. The women's doubles team is particularly close to qualifying, which would mark a first in Turkish badminton history.

Coach Murat Sonmez has been training these athletes since they were six or seven years old. Watching them become Mediterranean champions has been the culmination of years of dedication in a sport that has never brought Turkey this level of success.

The team's breakthrough matters far beyond their own Olympic dreams. Erzincan is showing that world-class athletes can emerge from anywhere with the right training and commitment.

Nazli Can Inci has competed for 15 years on the national team, and this success validates every hour of practice. Emre Sonmez said the team feels proud to represent both Turkey and their hometown on the international stage.

The athletes still face crucial ranking tournaments and the European Championship before qualification is secured. Strong performances in these competitions will determine whether they earn their Olympic spots.
