Turtle So Covered in Barnacles She Couldn't Move Thrives Now
A green sea turtle found stranded on an Australian beach was so sick and covered in barnacles she couldn't swim. Nine months later, Kalani is back in the ocean, healthy and thriving.
When a beachgoer spotted a sea turtle stranded on Lennox Head Beach in New South Wales, Australia, they knew something was seriously wrong.
Marine biologists from Australian Seabird & Turtle Rescue rushed to the scene in January 2025. What they found broke their hearts: an adult green sea turtle named Kalani, lethargic and struggling under the weight of hundreds of barnacles and leeches covering her body.
Kalani was so sick she couldn't scrape the organisms off herself. Healthy sea turtles can remove barnacles with their flippers, but Kalani didn't have the strength. The weight made swimming nearly impossible.
Veterinarians at Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital discovered even more problems. Kalani had a deep cut on her left hind flipper and showed signs of kidney failure. Her recovery would take months.
The rescue team got to work immediately. They carefully scraped away the barnacles and leeches, treated her wounds, and gave her medications. Week by week, Kalani started gaining weight and energy.

"Kalani is a little fighter," the rescue team shared on Facebook. By July, six months into her recovery, she had transformed into a healthy, spirited turtle who ruled the pre-release tank.
Sunny's Take
Assistant general manager Amanda Philp watched Kalani's personality bloom as she healed. "As turtles get healthier, their personalities really start to shine," Philp told The Dodo. "Kalani is now the first to appear at feeding time. We all love her."
The team calls her "the boss" of the feeding space. After nine months of dedicated care, Kalani was ready to return home.
In September 2025, Kalani flapped her way across the sand alongside four other rescued green sea turtles: Bumble Bee, Vegas, Ugg, and India. All five had been given a second chance at life.
"It's been amazing to watch her defy the odds," Philp said. "She's now healthy and truly flourishing."
The rescue team thanked their volunteers and supporters who make these happy endings possible. Every release is a celebration of what compassion and dedication can accomplish.
