Twins Return Lost Photos, Meet Birth Mother by Chance

Marielle and Mireille Landry were doing something ordinary when the extraordinary happened. After a soccer game, the 12-year-old twins stopped at a photo booth in a mall 90 minutes from home and found forgotten pictures of two women who looked about 25.

The twins tracked down the strangers nearby and returned their photos. It was just the polite thing to do.

Minutes later, they spotted their adoptive mom talking to those same women. "Who are these women, and why does our mom know them?" Marielle remembered thinking.

Then came the moment that changed everything. Their mom turned to them and explained: The women were their birth mother Nicole and her sister.

The twins had been adopted at three months old in a closed adoption. That meant no contact with birth parents until age 18. But Nicole had been receiving yearly photos through the adoption agency, so she recognized the girls immediately across the crowded mall.

The connections ran even deeper. The twins' names on their original birth certificates came from those two women. And that day, Mireille happened to be wearing the same shirt as Nicole's sister.

"It was such a surreal moment," Marielle told TODAY. "Nicole asked us if we had any questions, but I couldn't think clearly. I had so many, but I was in shock."

They learned Nicole had been just 15 when she had them. They learned their biological father had returned to Zambia after playing university soccer in Canada. Most importantly, they learned that even though Nicole was a stranger, something about her felt familiar.

Since that chance meeting, Nicole has remained part of their lives. It's not a traditional mother-daughter relationship. Marielle describes it more like "close cousins."

"We were raised by the most incredible parents," Marielle said. "But I am so glad the universe brought Nicole into our lives."

The twins have also built connections with Nicole's extended family, including her son. They found room in their hearts for both families without diminishing either relationship.

A simple act of kindness returning lost photos created a bridge that wasn't supposed to exist for another six years. Sometimes life knows better than the paperwork.
