Two African Nations Launch Solar Portals This Week

Two southern African nations just took a major leap forward in making clean energy accessible to everyday people.

Eswatini and Namibia both launched online portals this week that allow homeowners and businesses to apply for rooftop solar installations with just a few clicks. The platforms eliminate mountains of paperwork and bureaucratic delays that previously kept many people from switching to solar power.

Eswatini's platform, rolled out by the country's Energy Regulatory Authority, handles applications for solar systems up to 2 megawatts. The digital portal manages everything from processing applications to licensing installers, making the entire process transparent and trackable.

"We are not simply launching a digital platform," said ESERA CEO Skhumbuzo Tsabedze at the launch during Eswatini's international trade fair. "We are launching an enabler of Eswatini's energy transition and a practical tool that supports greater participation in the green economy."

Just one day later on September 1st, Namibia's Electricity Control Board unveiled its own platform for systems up to 500 kilowatts. The service gives citizens a simple way to apply, track their progress, and connect their solar panels to the national grid.

Ana-Beatriz Martins, head of the EU Delegation to Namibia, praised the launch for improving both grid security and customer protection. "Digitalisation can make regulating the sector more transparent," she noted.

The Ripple Effect

These portals represent more than just administrative convenience. They're opening doors for thousands of families and businesses to generate their own clean power, reduce electricity costs, and contribute to fighting climate change.

The timing couldn't be better. Eswatini currently has 30 megawatts of operational solar power with another 123 megawatts under construction, according to the Africa Solar Industry Association. Namibia has already built an impressive 1.49 gigawatts of solar capacity, with most serving commercial and industrial users.

By making applications faster and more transparent, both countries are removing barriers that kept potential solar adopters on the sidelines. Small business owners who couldn't navigate complex bureaucracy can now participate. Homeowners who feared endless delays can move forward with confidence.

The launches also position Eswatini and Namibia as leaders in Africa's renewable energy transition. Only a handful of African nations, including South Africa, have created similar digital platforms for solar applications.

Every new solar installation powered by these portals means cleaner air, lower energy costs, and more energy independence for communities across both nations.
