Feel Good

Two determined students from the waterfront community of Makoko in Lagos have graduated from university with first-class honours. Their incredible achievement demonstrates how early mentorship and educational access can completely transform young lives.

Two young scholars from Lagos just proved that human potential knows no boundaries. Mustapha Oseni and Sisianu Melawakou grew up in the floating community of Makoko and recently walked across the stage at Benson Idahosa University with First-Class Honours.

Their educational journey began over a decade ago through Slum2School Africa, a grassroots organisation founded by social entrepreneur Otto Orondaam. Melawakou joined the program in 2012 at age eight as one of the earliest inspirations behind the non-profit initiative.

She navigated significant obstacles along the way, including the threat of early marriage that nearly cut her schooling short. Melawakou persevered, earning her degree in Mass Communication with an exceptional 4.57 Grade Point Average and finishing as the second-best student in her department.

Reflecting on her graduation, Melawakou shared that her university years shaped her through student leadership, community volunteering, and personal growth. She now plans to use her education to pursue investigative reporting and inspirational storytelling.

Her classmate Mustapha Oseni charted an equally brilliant path in the digital world. He joined the organization's tech learning hub in 2018 and quickly developed a passion for software development and product management.

Despite the heartbreaking loss of his mother during his final year, Oseni stayed focused on his academic goals. He graduated as the second-best student in Computer Science with a stellar 4.89 Cumulative Grade Point Average.

During his university studies, Oseni coordinated community projects and completed internships at technology companies. He now steps into the global tech ecosystem equipped with first-rate software skills and proven leadership experience.

Why This Inspires

These two achievements highlight the life-changing ripple effect of investing in grassroots education. When children receive access to classrooms, supportive mentors, and believers in their dreams, they can rise to the top of any field.

Their radiant success reminds us all that when talent meets opportunity, a brighter future begins for an entire community.
