Two PA Seniors Among Top 1% of Students Nationwide
Two Owen J. Roberts High School seniors in Pennsylvania just earned semifinalist spots in the National Merit Scholarship Program, joining less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors nationwide. Both aspiring doctors could compete for scholarships worth up to $24 million.
Sejal Pola and Vihaan Putumbaka just joined an elite group of academic achievers, earning National Merit Scholarship semifinalist status at Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
The two seniors scored among the highest on their PSAT tests out of 1.2 million juniors who entered the competition. Only about 16,000 students nationwide made it to semifinalist status, representing less than 1% of all U.S. high school seniors.
Both students share a passion for medicine and helping others. Sejal, a member of the school's DECA team, plans to major in molecular biology on her path to becoming a doctor. Vihaan, president of the French Club, will pursue pre-med studies after graduation.
The recognition opens doors to serious financial support. Semifinalists can compete for 6,700 scholarships totaling nearly $24 million, awarded in spring 2027. About 95% of semifinalists advance to finalist status, and roughly half of those finalists win scholarships.
To become finalists, both students must submit detailed applications showcasing their academic records, leadership, community involvement, and awards. They'll also write essays and submit SAT or ACT scores confirming their earlier performance.

"Sejal and Vihaan have both distinguished themselves as exemplary students in our school district, and we could not be more proud," said Principal Steven Kollar. The school celebrates not just their test scores, but their dedication to excellence throughout high school.
The Ripple Effect
These achievements reflect more than individual success. They highlight how Owen J. Roberts School District supports academic excellence and prepares students for rigorous college studies. The school's investment in programs like DECA and French Club gives students platforms to develop leadership skills alongside academic achievement.
National Merit winners join nearly 395,000 other Merit Scholars recognized since the program began. The scholarships come from three sources: 2,500 direct National Merit awards of $2,500 each, 700 corporate-sponsored scholarships, and 3,500 college-sponsored awards for students attending specific universities.
Winners will be announced in nationwide releases from April through July 2027, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.
Two students from one Pennsylvania high school just proved that excellence happens anywhere determination meets opportunity.
