Two Rookies Win First LPGA Titles in Team Championship

Two best friends just turned their professional golf dreams into reality at the same moment, winning their first LPGA Tour title as a team.

Gina Kim and Yana Wilson fired an 8-under-par 62 in the final round Sunday to win the Dow Championship at Midland Country Club in Michigan. The Americans finished at 17-under-par, holding off a talented South Korean duo by two shots.

The victory looked anything but easy for the young pair. Wilson, just 19 years old, admitted they spent the final holes feeling completely out of their element in unfamiliar territory.

"We walked down 18 just now and we were like, 'Does this feel weird to you? Like this is so weird,'" Wilson said after the round. Despite the nerves, they kept their composure when it mattered most.

A game-changing moment came early in the final round when Kim holed out from the fairway for an eagle on the fifth hole. She thought she'd hit a good shot for a tap-in birdie, but the ball disappeared into the cup instead.

"I think that really set the tone for the day," Kim said of the unexpected eagle that gave the team momentum.

Why This Inspires

The partnership succeeds because of genuine friendship built through shared struggle. Kim and Wilson earned their LPGA Tour cards together last season on the Epson Tour, golf's version of the minor leagues, finishing second and third on the money list.

Kim specifically asked Wilson to be her partner because she'd seen her friend perform under pressure in high-stakes situations. They'd played together in final groups before and knew they could trust each other when the pressure mounted.

The win came in Kim's 64th LPGA Tour start, making the long wait worth every frustrating week. For Wilson, the breakthrough arrived in just her ninth start as a rookie and reigning U.S. Girls' Junior champion.

"This has been the most fun week," Kim said. "It's been tough, and it's nice to have a really good friend to be able to do this by."

Sometimes the best victories are the ones you don't have to celebrate alone.
