Two Shoppers Stop Armed Gunman at Las Vegas Store

Merconie Clark was grabbing lunch at a Las Vegas grocery store on May 12 when he heard gunshots ring out. His first instinct was to run and help others escape to safety.

But when an employee screamed "That's him," Clark turned around and locked eyes with the gunman. The shooter reached for his weapon.

Clark didn't hesitate. He rushed forward, grabbed the gun, and wrestled the suspect to the ground.

"I wasn't thinking about myself," Clark said. "It was about making sure he wasn't going to do this to anybody else."

As Clark struggled to hold the gunman down, he called out for help. That's when another shopper, Darius Alston, came running to assist. Together, the two strangers kept the suspect pinned until police arrived.

Video footage captured the two men embracing afterward, a powerful moment between heroes who had just met.

Clark's bravery came at a cost he's still processing. Two weeks later, he experiences panic attacks triggered by everyday grocery shopping. He thinks about his wife and daughter, and how close he came to never seeing them again.

But when asked if he'd do it differently, his answer is immediate. "I still would do this," he said. "I wouldn't have changed anything."

His wife wishes he had just protected himself. Clark understands her fear, yet he stands by his choice to help others first.

The truck driver from California is now recovering from both physical and emotional injuries. His family started a GoFundMe to support his healing journey.

Clark wants others to know one simple thing: if you're able to help, you should help. It's a message that resonates beyond that terrifying day at Smith's grocery store.
