Two Texas Teens Earn National Red Cross Leadership
After discovering their passion for helping others in high school, two North Texas students earned spots on the American Red Cross National Youth Council. Today, Ishani Gandi and Shreya Jupelly guide thousands of young volunteers across the country.
When an emergency responder saved Shreya Jupelly's grandfather during a sudden heart attack, she made a lifelong promise to help others in need. That pivotal moment sparked an inspiring journey that brought Jupelly and fellow North Texas student Ishani Gandi to the highest ranks of American youth volunteerism.
Today, both young women serve on the elite 16-member American Red Cross National Youth Council. Together, they shape nationwide humanitarian initiatives and empower the next generation of civic leaders across the country.
Their dedicated paths began with simple local acts of service in their hometown Texas communities. Gandi, an aspiring physician who wanted to support community health, initially joined the organization as a youth placement specialist to connect incoming volunteers with positions matching their unique talents.
Her natural leadership quickly gained national recognition during National Youth Involvement Month. As campaign lead, Gandi organized creative educational events and led fundraising efforts that generated more than $14,000 for critical relief programs.
She now serves as the national outreach and communications committee lead, entering her second productive term on the council. Her strategic work ensures that youth perspectives remain central to disaster response, blood drives, and community safety efforts.
Meanwhile, Jupelly transformed her deep gratitude for her grandfather's rescue into hands-on emergency training. She earned certifications in CPR, basic life support, and severe trauma care before founding a thriving Red Cross Club at her local high school.
Her grassroots passion quickly expanded as she guided youth executive boards and coordinated volunteers across the North Texas region. Now stepping into the role of national club program lead, Jupelly guides schools across the country as they establish their own dynamic campus branches.
Both students balance demanding pre-college and university schedules with their extensive volunteer responsibilities, demonstrating exceptional focus and grace. Along the way, they have honed vital life skills in crisis management, public speaking, team collaboration, and creative problem-solving.
The Ripple Effect
The dedication of these two young leaders extends far beyond the boardrooms of the National Youth Council. By training peers in emergency response and funding vital relief programs, they build stronger neighborhoods equipped to protect lives during unexpected crises.
Their journey shows how young people can turn everyday empathy into profound structural change that protects vulnerable communities. Every new campus club Jupelly supports and every volunteer Gandi inspires creates an enduring chain reaction of hope and safety.
By turning personal purpose into nationwide action, these remarkable students prove that youthful compassion has the power to heal and protect our world.
