Two Young Stars Earn Their Moment on Baseball's Biggest Stage

Two young Japanese baseball players are about to introduce themselves to the world after years of quiet excellence earned them a dream opportunity.

Kaito Kozono and Shota Morishita, both 25, have been selected to represent Japan at the World Baseball Classic alongside superstars like Shohei Ohtani. While they may not be household names yet, their selection tells a powerful story about perseverance paying off.

Since manager Hirokazu Ibata took charge of Samurai Japan in 2023, Kozono and Morishita have been there almost every step of the way. The duo has suited up for five of Japan's last six major international tournaments, building trust and proving their worth game after game.

Their domestic achievements back up the faith Ibata has shown in them. Kozono, an infielder for the Hiroshima Carp, won the Central League batting title last season and can play multiple positions. Morishita, an outfielder for the Hanshin Tigers, won a Golden Glove while hitting 23 home runs and driving in 89 runs.

At the 2024 Premier12 tournament, both players earned spots on the All-World Team. Kozono delivered a standout performance against the United States with two home runs and seven RBIs in a single game, announcing his arrival on the international stage.

"Honestly, I was surprised," Kozono said after being selected. "It's my first time playing with those kinds of players, but the most important thing is to win."

Ibata praised Kozono's consistency during Monday's roster announcement. "He's been playing at tournaments since I became the manager, and he has performed well in every game," the manager said.
