UAE Approves First Drug to Block Hypertension at Its Source

Millions of people take blood pressure pills every day, but for up to half of them, the medications just don't work well enough. The UAE just approved a drug that could finally change that.

Baxfendy became the first hypertension medication approved anywhere in the world when the Emirates Drug Establishment gave it the green light. Unlike traditional blood pressure drugs that manage symptoms, this one stops the problem at its hormonal source.

The drug works by blocking aldosterone, a hormone that makes your body hold onto salt and water. When aldosterone builds up, it raises blood pressure and keeps it dangerously high. Baxfendy prevents the hormone from forming in the first place, giving the body a chance to release excess fluid and relax blood vessels naturally.

Dr. Salam Raad Bahjat Kashmoola, a family medicine consultant at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi, called it a major shift in treatment. Traditional medications try to counteract what aldosterone does after it's already in the body, but this new approach shuts down production completely.

The timing matters. High blood pressure affects 35 percent of Emiratis in Abu Dhabi, up from 24 percent just a decade ago. In Dubai, 38 percent of men and 16 percent of women have hypertension.

For people whose blood pressure stays high despite taking multiple medications, Baxfendy offers real hope. Clinical trials showed response rates between 40 and 70 percent in patients who hadn't responded to other treatments. Those are significant numbers for a condition that can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.

The drug has been submitted for priority review by the US Food and Drug Administration. Worldwide, 1.4 billion people live with hypertension, and about half of American patients on multiple medications still can't get their blood pressure under control.

The Ripple Effect

The UAE's quick approval signals confidence in the science and could speed up access in other countries. AstraZeneca, the company behind Baxfendy, says adverse effects are typically mild, making it a practical option for long-term use.

Public health experts still emphasize that lifestyle changes come first. Maintaining a healthy weight, reducing salt intake, and staying active can control blood pressure without medication for many people. But for those who've tried everything and still struggle, having a new tool that works differently could mean the difference between managing their condition and facing serious complications.

This approval represents more than just another drug on pharmacy shelves—it's proof that targeting diseases at their root cause, rather than just treating symptoms, can open entirely new pathways to healing.
