The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development is transforming transportation across four African nations with nearly $200 million in road projects that will slash travel times and unlock economic growth. From Togo to Nigeria, these highways are connecting isolated communities to new opportunities.

A massive infrastructure push is bringing modern roads to millions of people across Africa, and the progress is moving faster than anyone expected.

The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development just released an update on four major road projects spanning Togo, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. Together, these highways represent nearly $200 million in investment designed to cut travel times, reduce shipping costs, and connect rural communities to economic opportunity.

In Togo, workers have reached 92% completion on a critical 62-kilometer highway linking Sokodé and Bassar. The $10 million project includes flood protection systems and safety upgrades that will make transport safer and cheaper between the capital Lomé and neighboring countries.

Madagascar's ambitious 117-kilometer dual-lane highway is 80% complete, thanks to a $30 million loan. The route includes seven new bridges specifically engineered to connect isolated farming villages to city markets, opening new pathways for agriculture and tourism.

Nigeria's Minna-Bida Road Project has hit 45% completion on its 82-kilometer stretch. When finished, the $45 million highway will cut travel time between these two cities in half and reduce vehicle operating costs by 31%, a game changer for regional commerce.

Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, emphasized that direct monitoring ensures every project meets international quality standards. "Our efforts reinforce ADFD's role as an extension of the UAE's vision in creating sustainable development impact that benefits communities," he said.

The Ripple Effect

These roads represent far more than pavement and bridges. They're economic lifelines that reduce the cost of bringing food to market, getting students to school, and accessing healthcare in emergencies.

The Abu Dhabi Fund has been particularly committed to Ethiopia, investing over $3 billion since 2012 in everything from roads to emergency food aid. During the 2022 drought and conflict crisis, ADFD deployed $60 million that provided life-saving nutrition to 1.6 million people across three regions.

High-level talks are now underway to expand these partnerships even further, with new projects targeting green energy and job creation across the continent.

Modern roads might seem basic, but they're the foundation that allows everything else to flourish.
