UAE Plans Global Water Solutions at Sustainability Week

The United Arab Emirates just positioned itself at the forefront of solving one of humanity's biggest challenges: ensuring everyone has access to clean water.

At Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2026, UAE officials unveiled ambitious plans to tackle global water scarcity through smarter investments, emerging technology, and a fresh focus on youth leadership. The announcement comes as the UAE prepares to co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference with Senegal this summer.

Assistant Minister Abdulla Balalaa brought together leaders from government, business, finance, and civil society throughout the week. Their mission was simple but powerful: shift water from a development problem to an economic opportunity that benefits everyone.

"Water is no longer just a development issue. It is a fundamental economic risk and opportunity," Balalaa explained. "We need to move from fragmented projects to systems change."

The UAE introduced a dedicated conference theme on water investments, focusing on financing, technology, innovation, and capacity building. This marks the first time investment has been elevated as a primary pillar in global water diplomacy.

One closed-door roundtable examined the critical link between water and food security. As climate change intensifies droughts and floods worldwide, ensuring stable water supplies for agriculture becomes increasingly urgent.

Balalaa put it plainly: "Water is the future of food." The UAE is pushing for a new model that balances risk, drives innovation, and puts climate resilience at the center of water and agriculture cooperation.

The conversations happening in Abu Dhabi will directly shape policy at the High-Level Preparatory Meeting in Dakar later this month. From there, these ideas will inform the UN Water Conference agenda, potentially influencing how billions of dollars get invested in water infrastructure worldwide.

By bringing together public and private sectors, the UAE is demonstrating that water security requires everyone at the table. Young leaders are being included in these conversations, ensuring the next generation has a voice in solving problems they'll inherit.
