UCF Launches Peace Program with Irish Statesman Visit
A former Irish Prime Minister who helped end decades of conflict is teaching Florida students how to solve today's divisions. The University of Central Florida just launched a program sending students to Ireland to learn peacemaking firsthand.
Students at UCF are about to learn how one of history's toughest conflicts ended, and they'll hear it straight from the man who helped make it happen.
Bertie Ahern, the former Irish Prime Minister who negotiated the Good Friday Agreement that ended decades of violence in Northern Ireland, is speaking at the University of Central Florida Wednesday afternoon. The free public talk starts at 3 p.m. and launches the school's new Conflict Transformation Program.
The timing couldn't be better. UCF created this nonpartisan program to help people understand how past peacekeepers solved seemingly impossible feuds. The goal is teaching students to bridge divides in an increasingly polarized world.
"When you're looking at the state of the world right now, certainly we could use those lessons," said David Dumke, Executive Director of UCF's Office of Global Perspectives & International Initiatives.
The program goes beyond lectures. Later this May, six UCF students will travel to Belfast and Dublin alongside Egyptian students for an eight day immersion experience. They'll meet people who lived through the Troubles and hear firsthand how communities moved from violence to peace.

Students come from different backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to what they're learning. Some want careers as diplomats, while others plan to apply conflict resolution skills closer to home in their own communities.
The Ripple Effect
The program is raising private funds to cover all student expenses, which matters deeply at UCF where many are first generation college students working their way through school. No one will miss this chance because they can't afford it.
Former members of Congress from both parties are supporting the effort. Former Republican Rep. Dennis Ross and former Democratic Sen. Nick Rayhall will attend Wednesday's event through the Association of Former Members of Congress.
The program might eventually offer degrees or certifications. But right now, the focus is giving students transformative experiences that teach them how to heal divisions, whether between nations or neighbors.
These students won't just learn history. They'll learn hope, and they'll bring those lessons home to a country that needs them.
