UCLA Wins First NCAA Women's Basketball Championship

Lauren Betts stood on the court with her hands on her head, mouthing two words to the UCLA family section: "We did it." The Bruins had just secured their first NCAA women's basketball championship since 1978, crushing South Carolina 79-51 in a game that turned into a celebration long before the final buzzer.

The victory was especially sweet for a team that remembered last year's heartbreak. Just 12 months earlier, UCLA suffered the worst loss in tournament history when Connecticut beat them by 34 points in the semifinals.

"I just never wanted to feel that way ever again," said Betts, who earned the tournament's most outstanding player award. The senior center and her teammates used that pain as fuel, finishing this season with an incredible 37-1 record.

The championship game showcased everything UCLA does best. Betts scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Gabriela Jaquez added 21 points and 10 rebounds. All five starters scored in double digits as the Bruins dominated on both ends of the court.

By the end of the third quarter, UCLA had built a 30-point lead, the largest ever entering the final period of an NCAA championship game. Their defense held South Carolina to just 25.7% shooting and forced the Gamecocks to their lowest point total of the entire season.

Point guard Kiki Rice hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the first quarter, giving UCLA a 21-10 lead. "That moment, I was just like, 'OK, we got this,'" said senior Angela Dugalic.

The Ripple Effect

For UCLA women's basketball, this championship represents more than one spectacular season. It validates years of building a program culture focused on resilience and preparation. Six seniors, including Rice, Betts, Jaquez, Dugalic, Charlisse Leger-Walker, and Gianna Kneepkens, will leave college as champions, inspiring the next generation of Bruins players.

Coach Cori Close reflected on the rare achievement of envisioning a goal with a group of people and actually reaching it. "They earned every bit of it," she said after the game.

The celebration on the court told the whole story. Players rushed together as the final seconds ticked away, their joy uncontainable. "We are the only team that's ending their season with a win," Rice said, capturing the ultimate prize in college basketball.

After 48 years, UCLA women's basketball stands at the top of college sports once again.
