Ugandan and Congolese soldiers during Operation Shujaa rescue mission in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Uganda and DRC Rescue 200 Captives from Militant Camp

🦸 Hero Alert

More than 200 people, including children, walked free after Ugandan and Congolese forces raided an Islamist militant camp in eastern Congo last week. The successful rescue marks a major victory in the ongoing effort to restore peace and safety to communities that have suffered under militant control for years.

A joint military operation between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo freed over 200 civilians from a militant camp in northeastern DRC last week, giving hope to families searching for missing loved ones. The youngest rescued captive was just 14 years old.

The raid targeted a camp controlled by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) along the River Epulu. Forces killed several militants and recovered weapons and explosives during the operation.

The rescued civilians told soldiers about harsh conditions during their captivity. Many reported forced labor, insufficient food, and punishment for any disobedience.

Medical teams found several survivors suffering from malaria, respiratory infections, and physical exhaustion from their ordeal. Major General Stephen Mugerwa, who leads Operation Shujaa, reassured the freed captives they would reunite with their families soon.

"You are not under detention. You are the victims of abduction, and we shall ensure you are handed over to the relevant authorities so you can reunite with your families," Mugerwa told them.

The Ripple Effect

The sustained military pressure against the ADF is transforming life across eastern DRC. Dozens more former captives have been escaping from militant positions and reporting to joint force locations in recent weeks.

Communities that fled their homes during years of violence are now returning. Schools that closed their doors have reopened, welcoming students back to classrooms.

Cross-border trade between Uganda and DRC has resumed, bringing economic opportunity back to regions that desperately need it. Markets are filling with goods again, and families are rebuilding their lives.

Operation Shujaa launched in November 2021 after the ADF committed attacks on both sides of the Uganda-DRC border. The coordinated effort between the two countries has intensified since January of this year, leading to significant territorial gains.

Freedom is spreading across eastern Congo, one rescued family at a time.
