Uganda Builds Water Infrastructure for AFCON 2027

😊 Feel Good

Uganda is upgrading water systems across multiple cities to prepare for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations 2027. The improvements will benefit millions of residents long after the tournament ends.

Uganda's national water utility is transforming the country's water infrastructure with major upgrades that will serve communities for decades to come.

The National Water and Sewerage Corporation is carrying out emergency water projects in several cities, including a new system at River Kafu near Hoima City. The upgrades are part of Uganda's preparation to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027, which will bring thousands of visitors to the country.

Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha, the corporation's Managing Director, said the Hoima project will strengthen water supply to the city and critical facilities like the proposed stadium and Kabalega International Airport. The investment shows how major sporting events can spark infrastructure improvements that outlive the games themselves.

While some regions are experiencing temporary water disruptions during the upgrade work, engineers are working around the clock to restore service. In Mukono District and parts of North Eastern Kampala, teams are upgrading a critical joint on the main transmission pipeline that supplies water to the Nsumba Reservoirs.

The corporation is also fixing pump defects in Mbarara City's system, with repairs expected to take five to seven days. During that time, residents continue receiving rationed water from existing River Rwizi production sites.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond AFCON preparations, the water utility is rolling out improvements in more than 10 regions under its Strategic Plan 2025-2030. Areas including Ibanda, Tororo, Arua, Mbale, Lira, Iganga, Lugazi, and Masaka City will all see water supply upgrades in the coming years.

The infrastructure push addresses a fundamental need while building capacity for future growth. Reliable water access affects everything from public health to economic development, giving communities the foundation they need to thrive.

The upgrades demonstrate how international events can become catalysts for lasting improvements. What starts as tournament preparation becomes permanent infrastructure serving families, schools, hospitals, and businesses across Uganda.

Uganda is building infrastructure that will keep flowing long after the final whistle blows.
