Uganda Deploys Expert to Lead Ebola Preparedness in West Nile

Uganda isn't waiting for an emergency to protect its people from Ebola. The Ministry of Health has deployed Assistant Commissioner Dr. Jimmy Opigo to the West Nile region to coordinate preparedness efforts and strengthen surveillance systems in districts near international borders.

Dr. Opigo's mission focuses on helping local communities take ownership of disease prevention. He's working directly with district leaders, health workers, and community stakeholders to build robust detection and response systems that can catch suspected cases early.

"Our priority is the protection of health workers because they are the first point of contact for patients," Dr. Opigo said. These frontline medical staff play a critical role in detecting, managing, and reporting any suspicious cases before they can spread.

The West Nile region faces elevated risk due to its location bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan. Frequent cross-border movement for trade, healthcare, and family visits creates pathways for disease transmission, making vigilance essential.

Five frontline districts have already reactivated their Ebola task forces: Arua, Koboko, Nebbi, Pakwach, and Maracha. Each district is developing comprehensive response plans and training health workers on proper protective measures.

In Adjumani District, Health Officer Dr. Dominic Drametu reports significant progress. His team has strengthened facility-based surveillance, equipped health workers with protective gear, and intensified screening measures at all health facilities.

The approach emphasizes coordination across all levels of society. Security agencies, political leaders, religious figures, and cultural institutions are working together to ensure communities understand preventive measures and know when to report symptoms.

Health officials are urging residents to practice regular handwashing, use face masks appropriately, and immediately report any suspected cases. The ministry stresses that community cooperation is essential for early detection.
