Uganda Eye Camp to Treat 2,000+ People for Free

🦸 Hero Alert

A three-day free eye camp in Uganda will provide screenings, surgeries, and glasses to over 2,000 residents this month. The initiative honors a young philanthropist's legacy while bringing vital care to an underserved community.

Thousands of Ugandans will receive free eye care later this month thanks to a foundation honoring a businessman who made community service his mission.

The Ruparelia Foundation will host a three-day eye camp from March 27 to 29 at Bukedea Teaching Hospital in eastern Uganda. The event is held in memory of Rajiv Ruparelia, who died in a car accident last year but left behind a powerful legacy of helping others.

At least 2,000 people will receive free eye screenings and basic treatment during the camp. Around 300 residents will get cataract surgeries that can restore their sight, while 50 children will receive specialized eye operations tailored to their needs.

More than 1,000 people will walk away with free prescription glasses, potentially transforming their ability to work, learn, and enjoy daily life. For many in this rural district, access to eye care has been limited or unaffordable.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among praised the Ruparelia family for continuing Rajiv's philanthropic work. She thanked foundation leader Sudhir Ruparelia for supporting government efforts to bring essential health services to remote communities.

The Ripple Effect

Eye care might seem simple, but its impact reaches far beyond vision. A farmer who can see clearly again can return to work and support their family. A child who receives glasses can finally read the blackboard and keep up in school.

When private foundations partner with public health systems, underserved communities gain access to specialized care they might otherwise never receive. This camp represents one family's grief transformed into hope for thousands.

By bringing doctors, equipment, and expertise directly to Bukedea, organizers are removing the barriers of distance and cost that keep many Ugandans from getting the eye care they need.

One young man's legacy of generosity will now help restore sight and dignity to an entire community.
