Uganda Hospital Earns Top Lab Safety Certification

A Kampala hospital is proving that world-class medical testing is possible in Uganda, earning a rare international certification that could transform how patients receive diagnoses.

Kampala Hospital successfully passed its South African National Accreditation System reassessment, confirming its laboratory meets the same rigorous standards used in advanced medical facilities worldwide. The hospital also earned SafeCare certification for overall healthcare quality, becoming a model for accuracy and patient safety in the region.

The stakes couldn't be higher. Healthcare experts report that 10 to 15 percent of patients globally receive wrong diagnoses, and nearly 40 percent of those errors trace back to laboratory mistakes. In countries with less regulated lab systems, those numbers climb even higher.

Dr. Carolina Achola, Assistant Commissioner for Clinical Pathology at Uganda's Ministry of Health, explained why precision matters so much. "Every patient who walks into a health facility relies on lab results to guide treatment. If those results are inaccurate, it affects the entire chain of care," she said.

The certification process demanded complete transformation. Quality Assurance Manager Geraldine Namujjuzi described months of upgrading equipment, training staff, and documenting every procedure to match international protocols.

"This is not about a fancy building or a certificate," Namujjuzi explained. "It's about the patient, that mother who needs accurate results on time so doctors can make the right decisions."

The hospital's laboratory first earned accreditation in 2022 and has continued strengthening its systems. During the recent reassessment, evaluators found only one minor issue, a dramatic achievement for any facility.

Hospital CEO Dr. Peter Kibuuka emphasized that maintaining these standards requires ongoing commitment. "Quality is not easy to achieve, but once you do, you must maintain it," he said.

The Ripple Effect

Kampala Hospital's success is already inspiring change across Uganda's healthcare system. The Ministry of Health is now encouraging both public and private facilities to pursue similar accreditation, seeing it as the fastest path to reducing preventable diagnostic errors.

Laboratory Manager Brenda Nalunkuuma noted that her team views certification as just the beginning. "We have pledged to not only maintain standards but to improve the patient experience even further," she said.

Health officials are urging Ugandans to actively seek services from accredited hospitals and laboratories. Dr. Achola reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to expanding training, supervision, and quality assurance initiatives nationwide.

With one hospital proving that international medical standards are achievable in East Africa, Uganda's healthcare system is gaining a blueprint for protecting patients through precision.
