Residents in Mukono, Uganda receiving new dustbins for waste management and recycling program

Uganda Launches Free Dustbins to Tackle Waste Crisis

😊 Feel Good

Mukono Municipality residents are getting free dustbins in a new program that turns trash into income. The pilot project could expand nationwide if successful.

Fifty households in Mukono, Uganda are receiving something that might transform their community: free dustbins that could turn their trash problem into a money-making opportunity.

For years, residents of Mukono Municipality have struggled with garbage piling up in open spaces. Many families simply can't afford the fees charged by private waste collection companies, leaving them with few options but to dump their trash wherever they can.

Now, the National Environment Management Authority has partnered with the International Growth Centre and the London School of Economics to change that. They're distributing 100 dustbins across Upper Nabuti Village as part of a pilot program with a £20,000 budget.

But these aren't just ordinary trash cans. The initiative teaches residents to sort waste into two categories: biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials.

George Masengere, the municipal environment officer, says this simple step could dramatically reduce scattered waste across the community. More importantly, it opens up new income streams for families who need them most.

Biodegradable waste can be composted into manure for gardens and farms. Non-biodegradable items like plastic bottles can be sold to recycling plants, putting money directly into household budgets.

Deputy Resident District Commissioner Rhodah Titwe encouraged the first 50 families receiving bins to embrace these opportunities. The goal is proving that proper waste management can be both cleaner and profitable.

The Ripple Effect

If this one-year pilot succeeds, the program could expand across Uganda. Communities throughout the country face similar challenges with expensive waste collection and limited municipal funding.

Project coordinator Edrine Baluku says the results will determine whether other regions can benefit from the same approach. The model addresses three problems at once: sanitation, affordability, and economic opportunity.

Residents who received the bins say they're relieved to finally have an affordable solution. For years, the garbage crisis felt unsolvable, but now their streets could be cleaner while their wallets get a little heavier.

A year from now, Mukono's cleaner streets and empowered residents might inspire communities across the nation.
