Uganda Shuts Down Unsafe Schools, Protects Students

Education inspectors in Uganda's Mukono District made a bold choice to protect children's wellbeing by closing two private schools that failed basic safety standards.

Led by District Inspector Isaac Gasujja, the inspection team discovered alarming conditions at Viema Junior School. Students slept on floors with dirty blankets, classrooms had no desks, and some teachers lacked proper qualifications.

At Excel Kindergarten and Primary School in Namayuba, the situation was equally troubling. Overcrowding and inadequate toilet facilities meant children had no safe, sanitary place to go during the school day.

The inspectors didn't hesitate. They ordered both schools closed immediately, sending students home until conditions improve.

Some parents worried about the disruption, and school administrators questioned the abrupt timing. But Community Development Officer Esteriko Kyegombe stood firm on the decision, explaining that no child should have to learn or live in unsafe, unsanitary conditions.
