Ugandan teachers learning to use smartphone app for accessing cooperative loans in classroom training session

Uganda Teachers Access Loans via Smartphone App

😊 Feel Good

150 teachers in Entebbe, Uganda just learned to use a new app that lets them apply for loans without leaving their classrooms. The digital system ends paperwork hassles and could reduce teacher absenteeism caused by running between offices for loan approvals.

Teachers in Entebbe, Uganda can now secure loans with a few taps on their smartphones, skipping the paperwork and office visits that used to pull them away from their classrooms.

The Walimu App launched its second phase by training 150 government school teachers to access their cooperative union loans digitally. Entebbe Municipal Council partnered with Walimu Cooperative Union Ltd to roll out the program.

Teachers create accounts on their Android phones, input their details, and submit loan applications from anywhere. The system handles everything from application to approval to disbursement, with full transparency on processing and repayment terms.

Paul Oketcho, Credit Manager at Walimu Cooperative Union, said the digital shift makes accessing funds faster and simpler. The training included hands-on onboarding to ensure teachers felt confident using the platform.

Stephen Nabende, National Chairperson of Walimu Cooperative Union, sees the app solving a chronic problem. Teacher absenteeism often spikes when educators spend school days carrying forms between offices collecting signatures for loan approvals.

The system also tackles another headache: unauthorized deductions. Since teachers input and verify their own loan details, disputes about payments should drop significantly.

The Ripple Effect

Teachers are already planning how easier loan access will change their lives. Teddy Nakitende from Lake Victoria School bought land with her previous Walimu SACCO loan and now aims to build a house with financing from the app.

Grace Nakasirye, headteacher at Chadwick Namate Primary School, said teachers can finally avoid predatory lenders charging crushing interest rates. The affordable credit through Walimu SACCO helped her acquire multiple plots of land.

She noted that many teachers plan to start side businesses to supplement their income, now that loans don't require days away from school to process. The cooperative has transformed financial stability for educators who previously had few safe borrowing options.

The app keeps teachers teaching while helping them build economic security, one smartphone loan at a time.
