UK and California Sign Clean Energy Partnership Deal

Two leaders on opposite sides of an ocean just proved that climate action doesn't need to wait for federal permission.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new clean energy partnership Monday at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. The agreement opens doors for British businesses to access California's massive clean tech market while sharing expertise on everything from renewable energy to protecting communities from extreme weather.

This marks the UK's 12th such partnership with individual US states, but the timing makes it especially significant. While President Trump's administration has rolled back climate protections and revoked key emissions reduction efforts, California is charging ahead with state-level green policies.

The memorandum of understanding creates a framework for transatlantic investment and connects research institutions across both regions. British companies like Octopus Energy are already expanding on the US west coast, bringing smart technology that helps customers control energy use and lower bills.

"This Government's clean energy mission is about taking back control of our energy to cut bills, create jobs, and tackle the climate crisis," Miliband said. Governor Newsom added that California remains "the best place in America to invest in a clean economy because we set clear goals and we deliver."

The partnership welcomed nearly a billion dollars in clean tech investment from Octopus Energy. Nick Chaset, chief executive at Octopus Energy US, explained they're already working with Southern California Edison to help electric vehicles and home batteries support the grid while giving customers more control.

The Ripple Effect

This agreement shows how climate action can flourish through state and international partnerships, even when federal support wavers. The UK Energy Department expects the deal to unlock export opportunities and create skilled jobs across Britain while helping both regions reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The partnership also focuses on nature conservation and building resilience against climate disasters, protecting homes and local economies from increasingly severe weather events. By connecting experts and scaling new technologies across both economies, the agreement accelerates the clean energy transition through innovation rather than politics.

Despite disagreements with the Trump administration on renewable energy, the UK continues building strategic alliances where common ground exists, including a nuclear power deal signed last September.
