UK Bans Social Media for Kids Under 16 Starting 2026

Parents across Britain are celebrating a groundbreaking decision that puts children's wellbeing ahead of big tech profits. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that the UK will ban children under 16 from using TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook and X starting early next year.

The move makes Britain a global leader in protecting young people online. Australia pioneered this approach last year, and now Canada, Brazil, Indonesia, France, Spain, Denmark, Thailand and South Korea are following suit with similar restrictions.

The decision came after 116,000 parents, children and experts responded to a public consultation. That's the second-highest response in British government history, showing just how desperately families wanted change.

More than 90% of those responses supported keeping kids off social media until age 16. Parents reported seeing firsthand how these platforms were making their children unhappy, anxious and distracted from real life.

Starmer, a father of two teenagers himself, put it simply: "Every parent can see it with their own eyes. Social media is making children unhappy." He said he's heard from countless families crying out for protection and the government has a responsibility to act.

The new rules come with serious teeth. Tech companies that fail to keep underage users off their platforms could face fines worth millions of dollars. Importantly, enforcement will target the companies, not the kids trying to access the sites.

Some platforms will be exempt from the ban. Messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal can still be used by younger teens, as can YouTube Kids, which is designed specifically for children with built-in safety features.

The Ripple Effect

This policy shift is creating waves far beyond Britain's borders. When one major nation takes a stand for children's mental health, it makes it easier for others to follow.

World leaders are already taking notice. Starmer planned to discuss the policy with President Trump and other heads of state at this week's G7 summit in France, potentially inspiring more countries to prioritize kids over corporate interests.

The consultation results tell a powerful story: when given the choice, the overwhelming majority of parents want their children protected from social media's documented harms. They want their kids playing outside, building real friendships, and developing healthy habits before navigating the complex world of online platforms.
