UK Hits 2 Million Electric Cars on the Road

Britain's roads just welcomed their two millionth electric car, a landmark achievement in the country's journey toward cleaner air and climate action.

The UK registered 149,247 new vehicles in April, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. That's a 24% jump from last year and the strongest April performance since 2019.

Even more encouraging: electric and hybrid vehicles now make up more than half of all new car sales. Battery electric vehicles alone saw a remarkable 59% surge compared to last year, capturing over a quarter of April's market.

The shift is happening across the board. Fleet buyers increased their purchases by nearly 27%, while individual car buyers grew their registrations by 20%. Every sector is embracing the transition to cleaner vehicles.

Plugin hybrids and traditional hybrids also posted strong gains, rising 46% and 19% respectively. Together, electrified vehicles accounted for 53% of the market for the second month this year.

The growth comes despite higher upfront costs for electric vehicles and ongoing concerns about charging infrastructure. Many manufacturers have offered significant discounts to make EVs more accessible to everyday buyers.

This milestone represents more than just numbers on a registration form. Two million electric vehicles means cleaner air in cities where children play and families live. It means reduced carbon emissions equivalent to taking hundreds of thousands of gas-powered cars off the road permanently.

Looking ahead, industry forecasters expect electric vehicles to account for nearly a third of new car sales by 2027. While challenges remain around charging infrastructure and vehicle costs, the momentum is unmistakable.
