UK Homes Generate 10M Hours of Free Solar AC During Heatwave

While Europe swelters under record temperatures, homeowners with solar panels are discovering an unexpected bonus: free air conditioning powered entirely by the sun.

A new analysis by energy think tank Ember reveals that during the recent UK heatwave, a typical home with rooftop solar generated enough electricity to run an air conditioner for five hours every day. Across 1.9 million solar-equipped UK homes, that added up to 10 million hours of cooling on each peak heat day.

The timing couldn't be more perfect. Solar panels produce the most energy exactly when people need cooling the most: during hot, sunny afternoons. "Solar power and air conditioning are complementary technologies," Ember researchers note, with both peaking during summer months.

This solar solution arrives just as demand for cooling is about to explode. The EU expects to have 275 million AC units by 2050, up from far fewer today. The UK's Climate Change Committee predicts that 22 percent of British buildings will need active cooling as temperatures rise.

That growth would normally spell disaster for carbon emissions. Traditional fossil fuel-powered AC already accounts for seven percent of global electricity use. But the solar revolution is changing that equation.

The Bright Side

Air conditioning saves lives during extreme heat. A 2021 study estimated that cooling units prevented nearly 200,000 premature deaths in 2019 alone. Now, with solar energy expanding rapidly across Europe, those lifesaving systems can run without adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

The technology is getting better, too. Modern AC units are becoming more energy efficient, and the EU is phasing out harmful refrigerants in favor of natural alternatives. By 2050, all the most damaging refrigerant gases will be eliminated from European markets entirely.

For UK homeowners who've already invested in rooftop solar, the recent heatwave brought an unexpected return: staying comfortable without worrying about electricity bills or environmental impact. Each sunny day that would have once meant choosing between sweltering heat and expensive, carbon-heavy cooling now offers a third option.

As one Birmingham resident put it, "My panels are finally earning their keep." With climate change bringing hotter summers, that's a bright spot worth celebrating.
