Britain's push to make homes more energy efficient just became a massive jobs opportunity, with 140,000 construction positions opening up across the country.

New guidance released by climate charity Ashden shows housing associations and local authorities how to create local jobs while upgrading homes for energy efficiency. The Greener Homes and Good Local Jobs Procurement Guidance turns necessary home improvements into career pathways for thousands of workers.

The timing couldn't be better. Britain needs retrofit coordinators, heat pump installers, insulation specialists, and multi-trade workers right now. With a third of the current construction workforce set to retire by 2035, these new positions offer stable careers in a growing field.

The guide emerged from conversations with over 100 retrofit practitioners, including housing groups, contractors, and local authorities. It provides step-by-step advice on embedding job creation into every stage of home improvement projects, from planning to completion.

Leeds leads the way with its Real Green Jobs Accelerator program, created by Efficiency North. The initiative combines recruitment, hands-on training, work experience, and guaranteed employment all in one package. Workers gain practical skills while helping their communities live in warmer, more affordable homes.

These aren't temporary positions. As Britain works toward its climate goals, demand for retrofit specialists will only grow. Young people entering the field today are building careers in an essential industry.

The guidance aligns with the UK Government's updated Social Value Model, which emphasizes good jobs and local opportunities in public spending. Starting January 2027, major government contracts must demonstrate how they create employment and training opportunities.
