UK Locks in Record 4.9GW Solar in Clean Energy Auction

Britain just made its biggest solar power bet in history, and it's going to save households serious money while slashing carbon emissions.

The government's latest renewable energy auction secured a record 4.9 gigawatts of solar power across 157 projects. That's enough clean electricity to power millions of homes, and it comes at a price that makes fossil fuels look expensive.

The AR7a auction round delivered more than just solar wins. The government also locked in 1.3 gigawatts of onshore wind across 28 projects and nearly 21 megawatts of tidal stream power through four projects.

Combined with last month's offshore wind auction, Britain now has 14.7 gigawatts of new renewable capacity in the pipeline. That's enough to power 16 million homes across the country.

The price tag tells an even better story. New solar energy was secured at £65.23 per megawatt hour, while onshore wind came in at £72.24. Compare that to new gas-fired plants, which cost £147 per megawatt hour to build and operate.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband called it proof that clean power makes economic sense. "By backing solar and onshore wind at scale, we're driving bills down for good and protecting families, businesses, and our country from the fossil fuel rollercoaster," he said.

The Royal Academy of Engineering praised the auction results but emphasized the real work starts now. Dr Simon Harrison pointed out that delivering these projects safely and efficiently will demand world-class engineering, manufacturing, and project management.

The Ripple Effect

This massive renewable energy push does more than just generate clean electricity. It shields British households from volatile global gas prices controlled by foreign powers, giving the country genuine energy independence.

The auction puts Britain firmly back on track to meet its 2030 clean energy commitments. But experts say this level of ambition needs to continue into future auction rounds to truly transform the energy system.

The engineering challenge ahead is significant. These projects require sophisticated integration into the existing power grid, alongside innovations in storage, networks, and flexibility.

With continued policy support and investment in skills and supply chains, Britain can maintain its international leadership in renewable energy while building a more resilient energy future for everyone.
