UK Police Test First Breathalyzer for Laughing Gas Drivers

Two police forces in England are testing a groundbreaking device that could save lives by detecting laughing gas use in drivers within minutes.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, alongside Thames Valley Police, are trialing the world's first roadside breathalyzer for nitrous oxide. The portable device delivers results in minutes and can detect whether someone inhaled the gas up to two hours earlier.

Until now, officers had no way to prove a driver used laughing gas, making prosecution nearly impossible. That gap in enforcement left a dangerous loophole on the roads, even though nitrous oxide became a Class C drug with potential two-year prison sentences for unlawful possession.

The timing matters. Police say driving under the influence of nitrous oxide has become an emerging threat, particularly among young drivers who don't understand the risks. The gas can cause unconsciousness, neurological damage, or death by cutting oxygen supply to the brain.

Respira Technologies created the breathalyzer following research at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Officers simply have users breathe into the device, similar to alcohol breathalyzers that became standard decades ago.

Acting Superintendent Emma Hart explained why her forces jumped at the chance to test the technology. "When we saw the opportunity to test this new technology, we knew how important it could be towards these devices being rolled out across the country," she said.

The testing phase aims to prove the devices work reliably before expanding nationwide. Success could establish a new standard for road safety enforcement across the UK and potentially worldwide.

This innovation addresses a gap that has frustrated law enforcement and endangered communities. Officers have already witnessed deaths connected to drivers under the influence of nitrous oxide, but lacked tools to prevent future tragedies.
