UK Renewables Hit 52.5% of Electricity for Second Year

Britain just proved that clean energy isn't the future anymore. It's the present.

Renewables generated a record 52.5% of the UK's electricity in 2025, marking the second consecutive year the country stayed above the 50% threshold. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced the milestone, which surpasses 2024's record of 50.4%.

Wind led the charge, accounting for 30% of all electricity generated across the nation. Offshore turbines alone contributed 17.9%, while onshore wind delivered another 12.1%. Together, wind farms produced ten times more electricity than they did just a decade ago.

Solar energy also reached new heights. Panels across the UK supplied 6.9% of the country's electricity, up from 5.1% the previous year. Expanded capacity and sunnier skies helped push solar output to 20 terawatt hours, enough to power millions of homes.

The growth in renewables comes as coal generation dropped to zero. Britain completely phased out coal in 2024, closing the final chapter on the fossil fuel that once powered the Industrial Revolution.

The Ripple Effect

The shift to renewable energy is reshaping how Britain powers daily life. Every time someone turns on a light or charges their phone, there's now a better than even chance that energy came from wind or sunshine instead of fossil fuels.

This transformation is helping shield households from volatile gas prices. While gas still accounts for 31.5% of electricity and continues to influence pricing, the growing renewable sector provides a buffer against international market swings.

The industry is now calling for ambitious targets in the next renewable energy auction scheduled for July. Expanding offshore wind capacity remains a top priority, with experts seeing it as the key to further reducing dependence on gas.

Tara Singh, CEO of RenewableUK, celebrated the achievement. "These figures show renewables are now the backbone of Britain's power system, supplying most of our electricity for the second year running, with wind doing the heavy lifting," she said.

The numbers prove that transitioning to clean energy at scale isn't just possible—it's already happening.
