UK Solar Installations Hit Record 172,000 in 2026

Britain is experiencing a solar power revolution, with homeowners and businesses installing panels at a record-breaking pace.

Nearly 172,000 solar installations have been fitted across the UK since January 2026, according to new government data. July alone saw more than 19,800 rooftop solar panels installed, which works out to one new installation every two minutes.

The surge in solar adoption spans the entire country. Every UK nation and English region recorded increases over the past 12 months, with Wales leading the charge with an 18% rise, Scotland growing by 14%, and the North East up 11%.

The South East dominates solar deployment with 305,101 total installations, adding 22,628 new systems this year alone. The South West follows with 271,400 total installations, while the East of England rounds out the top three with 241,195 installations.

Rooftop solar is powering most of this growth, accounting for more than seven out of every 10 installations in July. Families are choosing to generate their own clean electricity and take control of their energy costs.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks highlighted how households are cutting their energy bills while contributing to clean power. The government's Warm Homes Plan aims to make rooftop solar even more affordable for families while tackling fuel poverty.

The Ripple Effect

The timing couldn't be better for UK households looking to join the solar movement. Major retailers including Currys, B&Q, Screwfix, and Amazon are preparing to stock plug-in solar panels following government rule changes that made them legal across Great Britain.

These plug-in systems make solar power accessible to renters and homeowners who can't install traditional rooftop panels. The technology allows people to simply plug solar panels into their home's electrical outlets, making clean energy easier than ever.

The regional data reveals this isn't just an affluent southeast phenomenon. The East Midlands saw a 17% increase, while the North West added nearly 16,000 installations this year, proving that solar adoption is spreading across income levels and regions.

July marked the third-highest month for solar installations on record, with nearly 28,000 systems completed. Only March and June 2026 saw higher numbers, suggesting momentum is building rather than slowing.
