UK Solar Installs Hit Record: One Every Two Minutes in 2025

While energy costs squeeze budgets worldwide, British households are flipping the script by installing solar panels at a pace never seen before.

The UK completed 269,000 solar installations in 2025, a 37% jump from the previous year. That's one new rooftop solar system every two minutes, all year long.

The surge shows no signs of slowing. April 2026 alone saw 23,000 installations, and nine of the ten best months for solar adoption have all happened in the past year. More than half of April's installations were on family homes, proving that everyday people are choosing to generate their own electricity.

Two big forces are driving this solar boom. First, conflicts in the Middle East have families worried about energy security and wanting more control over their power supply. Second, installing solar has gotten significantly cheaper, with costs dropping up to 9% recently.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband connected the dots between personal choice and national resilience. "As we face a second fossil fuel crisis in five years, Britain is taking back control of their energy by generating more clean power than ever before," he said.

The savings are real. Households with rooftop solar can cut up to £480 per month from their energy bills. To make solar even more accessible, the government plans to roll out low cost plug in panels in stores later this year, letting renters and apartment dwellers join the movement.

This isn't just about individual savings. Every rooftop panel reduces Britain's dependence on unpredictable fossil fuel markets. The country recently approved the Springwell Solar Farm, which will be the largest power producing solar farm in UK history, showing commitment at every scale.

When families generate their own electricity, they protect themselves from price spikes while building a cleaner grid for everyone. Each installation makes the next one easier, as neighbors see the benefits and installers gain experience.
