The timing couldn't have been better. England sweltered through its hottest June since records began in 1884, while parts of London saw zero rainfall in July. When temperatures hit 38.1°C at Kew Gardens in August, solar panels were already working overtime to keep the grid stable.
Chris Hewett, chief executive of Solar Energy UK, says the record came from "clear skies and continued growth in deployment." He's right about the growth: nearly 172,000 new solar installations have appeared across Britain since January 2026.

The rooftop revolution is accelerating. In July, installers added more than 19,800 solar panels to British homes, completing one installation every two minutes. Nearly 1.7 million UK households now generate their own sunshine power.
Those investments are paying off fast. During the 26 official heatwave days this summer, households with rooftop solar panels avoided an estimated £86.7 million in electricity costs, according to analysis by Utility Bidder.
The benefits reached beyond individual homes. Hewett notes that the solar surge "not only kept bills down for people with solar and batteries in their homes, but helped keep overall power prices much lower than they would have been if Britain had been relying on more gas generation during the day."
The Ripple Effect
Britain's solar capacity has jumped 18% in just one year, now reaching nearly 24 gigawatts nationwide. About 29% of that power comes from residential rooftops, turning ordinary homes into mini power stations that strengthen the entire grid.
The country's total solar generation for 2026 already sits 13% higher than the same period last year. While extreme heat can reduce solar panel efficiency slightly, the longer daylight hours and intense sunshine more than made up the difference.
