UK Trials Bird Flu Vaccine to Protect Turkey Flocks

Britain is testing a bird flu vaccine on turkeys in a trial that could transform how the country fights a disease that's killed hundreds of millions of birds worldwide.

The 24-week trial marks a significant departure from traditional methods. Instead of just culling infected flocks, the UK is now exploring whether vaccination can stop the virus before it spreads.

Bird flu has hit Britain hard. The government and poultry industry lose up to £174 million every year battling outbreaks that kill entire flocks, disrupt food supplies, and drive up prices at grocery stores.

Turkeys got chosen for the trial because they're especially vulnerable to the virus. When bird flu strikes a turkey farm, the mortality rates can be devastating.

The trial will test already approved vaccines in real-world farm conditions. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs wants to see if vaccines actually work outside the lab and whether they can protect Britain's export markets at the same time.

Britain isn't alone in this shift. France started vaccinating farm ducks in 2023 and became the first major poultry exporter to do so nationwide, crediting the program with successfully controlling the disease.

The Netherlands and United States are running their own vaccine trials too. The US is specifically studying how vaccination might affect its ability to export poultry products to other countries.

The Ripple Effect

This trial could reshape global poultry farming. For years, major producers avoided vaccines because of fears they'd mask virus spread and hurt exports, but France's success is changing minds.

Europe recently faced an unprecedented early surge in bird flu cases. Poultry outbreaks jumped to five times higher than 2023 levels and nearly double those from 2021, forcing farmers to cull massive numbers of birds.

The disease doesn't just hurt farmers. When flocks get wiped out, food prices climb and supply chains break down, affecting families trying to put dinner on the table.

Human infections remain rare, but preventing the virus from spreading in bird populations reduces the risk of it mutating into something more dangerous. Protecting poultry flocks means protecting people too.

If these trials prove successful, Britain could join France in pioneering a smarter approach to bird flu that saves both birds and livelihoods.
