UK Trials Contraceptive Plan to Save Red Squirrels

Britain's native red squirrels might finally catch a break thanks to an innovative contraceptive program targeting the invasive grey squirrels pushing them toward extinction.

The UK government is funding research into an oral contraceptive delivered through special feeders that only grey squirrels can access. This humane approach addresses a crisis that's reduced native red squirrel populations to just 38,900, down from historic highs, while grey squirrels have exploded to 2.7 million since arriving from North America in the 1800s.

The problem goes beyond numbers. Grey squirrels aggressively outcompete their smaller red cousins for food and carry squirrel pox virus, which kills red squirrels but leaves greys unharmed. They also strip bark from trees, causing an estimated £37 million in annual woodland damage across England and Wales.

Current control methods have been labeled ineffective, and public support strongly favors non-lethal solutions. The contraceptive pill research represents a major shift in wildlife management, offering population control without trapping or culling.

The government's updated five-year strategy includes multiple approaches. Thirty-five pine martens were reintroduced to Gloucestershire's Forest of Dean between 2019 and 2021, following successful grey squirrel reduction programs in Ireland and Scotland. These native predators naturally keep grey squirrel numbers in check without harming reds.

Landowners are receiving grants for equipment and training to manage grey squirrels on their properties. Volunteers are being trained to lead much of the ground-level work, creating a community-based approach to species recovery.

The Bright Side

This multi-pronged strategy shows how conservation can evolve beyond traditional methods. The contraceptive research, still in development, will soon move to landscape-scale trials testing feeder safety, effectiveness, and practicality.

Heather Harris from the Red Squirrel Recovery Network emphasized the urgency: "Without sustained and effective grey squirrel management, red squirrels could disappear from UK woodlands in 10 years." But she expressed optimism about translating policy into coordinated action.

The Animal and Plant Health Agency is leading the contraceptive research, funded by the UK Squirrel Accord and supporters. This collaboration between government, conservation groups, and landowners demonstrates how species recovery requires everyone working together.

Red squirrels have nearly vanished from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, clinging to survival in Scotland and small English pockets. But with humane tools finally matching the scale of the challenge, Britain's woodland icon has genuine hope for recovery.
