UK Wind and Solar Hit Record 34 Gigawatts of Power

British wind turbines and solar panels just achieved something remarkable, generating 34 gigawatts of electricity at midday on Wednesday while gas plants dropped to barely one gigawatt.

To put that in perspective, renewables produced 34 times more power than gas at peak. It's the highest clean energy output the UK has ever recorded.

This matters because it's happening right when the country needs it most. During an energy crisis triggered by international conflicts, homegrown wind and solar are acting as a shield against skyrocketing gas prices that hit family budgets hard.

The numbers tell an encouraging story. Wind power alone cut wholesale electricity prices by a third last year, squeezing out older, less efficient gas plants that cost more to run.

Jess Ralston from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit points out this is the second gas price crisis caused by war in just a few years. Every new turbine and solar panel installed makes the UK less vulnerable to the next one.

The math is simple but powerful. International markets control gas prices, not domestic drilling. Around 90% of North Sea oil and gas reserves have already been extracted, so that supply will only decline from here.
