Ukraine Raises Soldier Pay Up to $9,000 a Month

After more than four years of continuous deployment, Ukrainian soldiers are finally seeing their government invest in their wellbeing with major pay increases and clearer paths to discharge.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Friday that infantry troops will see their monthly salaries jump to between $5,700 and $9,000, more than double the current maximum of around $3,800 for frontline personnel. Even support staff will see raises, with non-combat roles increasing from $450 to $680 per month.

The reforms, set to begin in June, represent Ukraine's recognition that sustainable defense requires taking care of the people doing the fighting. Hundreds of thousands of men volunteered in 2022 when Russia invaded, but many have been deployed continuously since then under open-ended contracts.

The new system will introduce "phased discharge" based on time-based criteria, allowing long-serving troops to finally return home. While Zelenskyy didn't provide specific timelines, the shift away from indefinite service marks a fundamental change in how Ukraine manages its military personnel.

The timing matters beyond troop morale. Ukraine has struggled with manpower shortages, leading to aggressive conscription tactics that have sparked public criticism.
