Ukraine Sets Drone Interception Record at 22,500 Feet

Ukrainian operators just proved that the sky's no longer the limit when it comes to protecting their airspace.

Border guards from the 105th Chernihiv Border Detachment set a new world record on August 2, using a STING interceptor drone to destroy a Russian ZALA Z-20 reconnaissance aircraft at 6,858 meters (22,500 feet). The successful strike happened over the Chernihiv region, breaking the previous record of 6,400 meters set just weeks earlier by another Ukrainian unit.

The achievement represents more than just a number. Enemy forces have been pushing reconnaissance drones to higher altitudes, trying to fly beyond the reach of traditional defenses and interceptor technology.

The targeted Russian ZALA Z-20 was designed for long-range surveillance, with a six-hour flight time and operational range exceeding 100 kilometers. At nearly four miles up, it seemed safely out of reach.

But Ukrainian operators had other plans. Using their custom-built STING interceptor, they guided their drone through thin air where oxygen is scarce and temperatures plummet, successfully striking the target at an altitude most aviation experts would consider extremely challenging for small unmanned aircraft.

This breakthrough comes just days after another Ukrainian team used a Chaklun-KM drone to take down a rare Russian Forpost-R strike drone at 4,300 meters over the Kursk region. The rapid succession of high-altitude intercepts shows Ukrainian forces are consistently pushing technological boundaries.
