Ukrainian Refugee Graduates With Distinction in UK

Sofia Demkiv left everything behind when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, arriving in the UK weeks later with no idea if she'd ever see home again. This week, the 23-year-old walked across a graduation stage in Stoke-on-Trent, clutching a master's degree in marketing she earned with distinction.

"It was the first time in my life I felt truly proud of my academic achievements," Demkiv said. The journey from war-torn Kyiv to Keele University graduation wasn't just about earning a degree.

Demkiv was only 19 when her family heard explosions in the distance and made the heartbreaking decision to leave. She packed up her life with her mother, aunt, sister, and brother, not knowing if their home would still exist when they returned.

The family arrived in April 2022 through the UK government's Homes for Ukraine scheme. Settling in Stoke-on-Trent, Demkiv enrolled at Keele University while adjusting to a new country, language challenges, and the constant worry about loved ones back home.

She visited Kyiv in October and described an atmosphere impossible to fully grasp from afar. "People have sadly become used to the situation," she said, noting residents are now surprised if there isn't at least one attack a week.

Demkiv's story reminds us that resilience looks like studying for exams while your homeland is under siege. It looks like choosing hope when fear would be easier. Her distinction wasn't just academic excellence but a testament to the human capacity to rebuild amid chaos.

"I never could have imagined this level of kindness when we arrived," Demkiv said of her UK experience. She treasures the safety she's found while holding onto dreams of eventually returning to Ukraine to raise a family.

Now she's setting her sights on a career in financial technology, armed with her hard-earned degree and determination. The young woman who fled explosions has transformed trauma into triumph, and she's just getting started.
