UK's Atom Bank Cuts Emissions 22% While Growing 29%
A digital bank just proved you can grow your business and slash your carbon footprint at the same time. Atom Bank cut operational emissions by 22% while lending balances jumped 29% and customer numbers climbed 19%.
Atom Bank is rewriting the rulebook on what it means to be a sustainable business. The UK's app-based savings and lending firm just cut its operational carbon emissions by 22% during the same year it posted record growth across every metric that matters.
The numbers tell a powerful story. While emissions dropped by nearly a quarter, the bank welcomed 19% more customers, increased lending balances by 29%, and grew savings deposits by 31%. It's the kind of win-win that seemed impossible just a few years ago.
The achievement keeps Atom on track for an ambitious goal: becoming climate positive by 2035. That's one of the boldest climate pledges of any UK bank, and they're backing it up with action.
But Atom isn't stopping at cleaning up its own operations. The bank just uncovered a problem that affects the entire banking industry. Working with Experian and Durham University, they compared theoretical energy estimates with actual meter readings from over 1,000 homes in their mortgage portfolio.
The results surprised everyone. Banks might be over-reporting home emissions by as much as 50% because current energy performance certificates don't match reality. Even more interesting, homes rated most efficient showed almost no difference in actual energy use compared to less efficient ones.

Researchers at University College London confirmed the same pattern in a larger national study. Atom is now calling for the entire financial sector to collaborate on fixing these outdated measurement systems.
The bank is also putting money directly into nature. In 2024, they purchased 25 acres of newly planted woodland in Northumberland that will absorb nearly 7,000 tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime. That's equal to every bit of carbon the bank has produced since opening in 2014.
They're funding habitat creation too, supporting the UK's Biodiversity Net Gain program by financing new wildlife areas in regions where housing is expanding rapidly. Two sites in Cambridgeshire and Northampton are already protecting and creating new habitats while helping unlock needed housing.
The Ripple Effect
Atom's approach shows other businesses a clear path forward. BBVA, which invested in Atom ten years ago and is now its main shareholder, is learning from the bank's digital-first sustainability model. Every efficiency Atom discovers, every breakthrough in measuring real environmental impact, becomes a template other banks can follow.
Director of ESG Edward Twiddy captured it perfectly: "We believe it is possible and in fact essential to be sustainable both financially and environmentally." The bank's small but growing presence in UK banking is proving that profitability and planet-friendly practices aren't opposites.
They're proving sustainable banking isn't just good PR, it's good business that builds a better future for everyone.
