UN and EU Deliver 88 Tonnes of Aid to Mozambique Floods
The United Nations and European Union just delivered 88 tonnes of emergency supplies to help over 50,000 flood victims in Mozambique. The $500,000 donation includes food, hygiene items, and critical health supplies for women and children.
When massive floods swept through southern and central Mozambique, affecting more than 652,000 people, the international community responded with a powerful show of solidarity.
The United Nations and European Union handed over 88 tonnes of humanitarian supplies in Maputo on Monday, providing immediate relief to communities devastated by rising floodwaters. The donation includes food, hygiene items, child protection materials, and health supplements specifically designed for women and children.
Catherine Sozi, the UN Resident Coordinator in Mozambique, emphasized that this delivery represents far more than just logistics. "This is a concrete symbol of the international community's solidarity with the people of Mozambique," she said during the handover ceremony attended by Foreign Minister Manuela Lucas.
The $500,000 aid package will reach more than 50,000 people who lost their homes and livelihoods to the floods. EU Ambassador Antonino Maggiore announced that two additional planes carrying humanitarian supplies could arrive within days, ensuring continued support as communities rebuild.

The floods have destroyed 767 homes completely and damaged another 3,445 across the region. The country's main highway remains cut at several points, with the worst damage at Incoluane, where the Incomati River washed away several kilometers of road about 100 kilometers north of Maputo city.
The Ripple Effect
While repair crews work to restore the critical highway over the next two weeks, the government has already implemented creative solutions to keep goods moving. Ships are now transporting supplies to the Gaza port of Chonguene, bypassing the damaged sections and ensuring communities stay connected and supplied.
The quick international response showcases how global partnerships can deliver tangible hope during crises. Sozi acknowledged that while this assistance is crucial, it works alongside the incredible resilience already shown by local communities and government efforts on the ground.
The combination of immediate aid, additional shipments on the way, and smart logistical solutions demonstrates that Mozambique isn't facing this challenge alone. When disaster strikes, the world still shows up to help neighbors in need.
