UN Energy Leader Helps Secure $1.4 Trillion for Clean Power

The woman helping light up Africa and reshape global energy just received one of the world's top environmental honors, and her message is clear: the clean energy future is already here.

Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO of Sustainable Energy for All and a UN Special Representative, has helped secure more than $1.4 trillion in energy financing during her leadership. Much of that funding flows to the Global South, where hundreds of millions of people are finally getting access to electricity for the first time.

At the TIME Earth Awards in London, Ogunbiyi shared numbers that might surprise you. Several countries already run almost entirely on renewable energy: Bhutan, Nepal, and Paraguay lead the pack. Kenya powers more than 90% of its grid with clean energy and keeps climbing.

Her home country Nigeria is implementing one of the largest distributed renewable energy programs the world has ever seen. It's proof that developing nations aren't just catching up—they're leaping ahead.

The timing matters more than ever. By 2050, the Global South will represent 86% of the world's population and account for 60% of global energy demand. That growing need is driving innovation at breathtaking speed.

"What gives me hope is that we are living through one of the greatest transformations in human history," Ogunbiyi said. "The transition from an energy system built on extraction and pollution to one built on renewal and regeneration."

The Ripple Effect

The momentum is building in ways that can't be reversed. In most parts of the world, clean energy has become the most economically viable option, not just the environmentally friendly one.

Young people across continents are demanding both a healthy planet and the energy access needed for a dignified life. Their voices are creating what Ogunbiyi calls "a collective awakening that things must be done differently."

The technology already exists to make this transformation complete. What's needed now is moving money where it matters most: to communities still waiting for their first solar panel, their first wind turbine, their first reliable power source.

Ogunbiyi frames it perfectly: "The clean energy transition is our generation's moonshot." Making it happen demands courage, collaboration, and determination—all qualities she demonstrates daily.
