Unbeaten Boxer Usyk: Fatherhood Changed Everything

The last time Oleksandr Usyk lost a fight, he went back to his hotel room and had a conversation with himself that would change everything.

It was 2009 at the World Championships, and the Ukrainian boxer realized losing wasn't the problem. Not learning from it was. He overhauled his training, married his girlfriend Yekatarina, and nine months later, his daughter Liza arrived.

"I looked at this mini person and thought 'OK, I need to change my life, because I'm now not just an athlete and boxer, now I'm husband and father,'" Usyk told BBC Sport from his training camp in Spain. "Liza really changed my life."

Since that amateur defeat 16 years and eight months ago, Usyk has been unstoppable. He's won all 24 professional fights, claimed Olympic gold in 2012, and became the rare fighter to achieve undisputed champion status at two different weight classes.

Now 39 and holding three heavyweight belts, he's preparing for what sounds like a Hollywood script: defending his WBC title against kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven at the foot of Egypt's Pyramids of Giza this Saturday. The Dutchman has just one professional boxing match on his record from 2014, but Usyk refuses to take any opponent lightly.

"I train like I'm fighting Tyson Fury or Daniel Dubois, because for me it's a serious fight," he said. The father approaches every bout with the same intensity, the same homework mentality that emerged from that hotel room reflection years ago.
