UNC Baseball Wins on Walk-Off Hit, Headed to World Series

Down to their final two outs and trailing by a run, the North Carolina baseball team refused to quit Sunday, rallying for an unforgettable 4-3 victory that punched their ticket to the College World Series in Omaha.

Center fielder Owen Hull delivered the game-winning hit after the Diamond Heels erased a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning against USC. The dramatic finish at Boshamer Stadium sent players and fans into celebration mode, marking UNC's 13th trip to college baseball's biggest stage.

The comeback seemed unlikely after USC's Andrew Johnson dominated for more than seven innings, holding Carolina to just one run. The Trojans built their lead on solo home runs and looked poised to force a deciding Game 3 when they took a 3-2 advantage into the final frame.

But Cooper Nicholson drew a walk to start the ninth-inning rally, and Carter French singled to put runners in scoring position. Jake Schaffner tied the game with a sacrifice fly before Gavin Gallaher walked to set the stage for Hull.

After USC missed a foul ball that would have been the second out, Hull launched his next pitch into the left-center gap. The ball dropped in for the winning hit, capping a stellar four-hit performance that included three doubles earlier in the game.

Hull's heroics came after an entire season of resilience from this UNC squad. Sunday's win marked the third time this year the Diamond Heels won a weekend series after losing the opening game, showing a team that simply won't back down.

Starting pitcher Caden Glauber struck out a career-high 11 batters in more than seven innings, keeping his team close despite being in line for the loss. His teammates refused to let that happen, fighting until the final out was recorded.

"I have no words to describe it," Hull said after the game. "I love this team so much." Head coach Scott Forbes called it one of the most special games he's been part of at the stadium.

The victory gives UNC 50 wins this season for the first time since 2013 and marks their first Super Regional comeback after dropping Game 1. They'll face Ole Miss in Omaha next Friday with dreams of a national championship still very much alive.
