UNCG Seniors Skip Graduation, Win Conference Championship
Five UNC Greensboro softball players traded their graduation ceremony for a shot at their childhood dream. They won the Southern Conference Championship and earned their first NCAA tournament berth.
While their classmates crossed the stage at UNC Greensboro's commencement last Friday, five seniors were 300 miles away in Chattanooga, chasing a championship they'd dreamed about since they were kids.
The gamble paid off. The UNCG Spartans swept the Southern Conference Tournament, shutting out Samford twice to clinch the school's eighth conference title and punch their ticket to the NCAA tournament.
"I started attending big-time college softball games and conference championships as young as 9 years old," says graduating senior Kaylyn Belfield. "It has been a dream of mine to not only play Division I softball but to help a team win a conference championship."
The five seniors didn't miss graduation entirely. On April 28, they received their diplomas in a special ceremony held on their home field's outfield, surrounded by teammates, coaches, and family. One day later, they hit the road for the final games of their college careers.
The timing couldn't have been tighter. After their private commencement, the team traveled to Birmingham for their final regular season series. They beat Samford to finish 39-17 and claim the regular season conference title.
Then came Chattanooga. Every win meant one more game together, one more chance to keep their season alive. Senior pitcher Salem Ward won her 40th career game. Belfield notched her 200th career hit. The team played like they had nothing to lose and everything to prove.

Why This Inspires
This team's success runs deeper than talent. Nine new players joined this season, including seven freshmen. The seniors welcomed them, taught them, and built a culture where everyone pushed each other to be better.
"What makes this team so special is how deeply we care about one another both on and off the field," Ward says. "Everyone bought into the same goals and pushed each other to be better every single day."
Coach Janelle Breneman, who earned her 600th career win this season and was named SoCon Coach of the Year, credits the team's mental toughness. They focused on sports psychology and built resilience that showed when the pressure was highest.
In the championship game, junior pitcher Brooklyn Shroyer and senior catcher Madelyn McKinnon allowed just one hit in a historic shutout. It was the first shutout championship game in tournament history.
"The relief, joy, and sense of accomplishment after we made the last out was a feeling I'll never forget," McKinnon says.
On the bus ride home, the team stopped at Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the NCAA tournament selection show together. They learned they'd face sixth-seeded Clemson in Athens, Georgia.
Five graduates chose to delay their celebration for one more shot at glory, and they're heading to the biggest stage in college softball with zero regrets.
