United's Lie-Flat Economy Seats Launch in 2027
United Airlines just announced a game-changing economy seat design that lets passengers transform three seats into a bed. The Relax Row brings business class comfort to coach travelers starting in 2027.
United Airlines is bringing the comfort of business class to economy fliers with a seat design that lets you actually lie down and sleep during your flight.
The airline announced this week that its new "United Relax Row" will transform three economy seats into a single flat sleeping surface. The innovation uses armrests that lift completely out of the way and adjustable leg rests that fold up to 90 degrees, creating a couch-like bed in coach.
United plans to install up to 12 Relax Row sections per plane and roll them out across more than 200 aircraft by 2030. The seats will start appearing on flights in 2027.
When you book a Relax Row, you'll get a custom-fitted mattress pad, blankets, extra pillows, and even a plush toy for kids. The airline designed the experience specifically for families with young children, couples, and solo travelers who want more room to stretch out.
United becomes the first North American airline to offer lie-flat seating in economy class. While German carrier Lufthansa has allowed passengers to book entire rows with mattress toppers since 2021, United's built-in design takes the concept further with specialized seats made specifically for sleeping.

The announcement sparked celebration online. John Collison, president of Stripe, captured the excitement when he wrote on X: "United built the product that everyone who has ever been on an airplane has wanted!"
The Bright Side
For years, airlines have focused premium upgrades on first and business class passengers willing to pay top dollar. United's Relax Row shifts that trend by making lie-flat comfort accessible to economy travelers.
The move addresses one of air travel's biggest pain points: trying to rest during long flights while cramped in a standard seat. Families especially will benefit from having space where kids can actually sleep comfortably instead of fidgeting through red-eye flights.
By 2030, hundreds of United planes will offer this option, meaning more travelers will have access to a better flight experience without paying business class prices.
Sometimes innovation means bringing simple comforts to everyone, not just those who can afford the front of the plane.
